How to Be Happy

Henri de Régnier (1864-1936), "Le Bonheur," in Vestigia Flammae: Poèmes, 12th ed.
Qui te frôle au passage et qui s'offre à ta main;

Sans les lever au ciel où son aile volait;

Préfère au diamant le caillou de la route;
Hésite au carrefour et consulte l'écho.

Prends garde... Ne vêts pas ces couleurs éclatantes
Dont l'aspect fait grincer les dents de l'envieux;

My rough translation (not in verse, but following the French line by line):
If you want to be happy, don't pick the rose
That brushes against you on the path and offers itself to your hand;
The flower is already dead, soon after it bloomed,
Even while its flesh reveals a blood divine.

Don't stop the bird that goes though the air;      5
Don't aim either arrow or net at it
And let your eyes be satisfied with its passing shadow,
Without raising them to the sky where its wing was in flight;

Don't heed the voice that says to you: "Come." Don't heed
The cry of the flood or the call of the brook;      10
Choose the pebble on the pathway over the diamond;
Pause at the crossroads and take the echo's advice.

Be careful... Don't wear bright colors
That make the jealous man gnash his teeth at the sight;
A canvas tent, more so than a marble palace,      15
Makes waking carefree and sleep peaceful.

Laughter produces wrinkles as well as do tears.
Never say "More": instead say "Enough"...
Happiness is a God who walks empty-handed
And looks at Life with downcast eyes.      20
